Some health conditions or medications may temporarily defer you from donating. If you have questions about your eligibility to donate, check the list of medications and health conditions below to see whether you can donate. If you do not find your answer there, just call the blood bank at 484-9111 and speak with a nurse. You can also email your question to donate@lmbb.org

 
MEDICAL CONDITIONS
Colds and flu   symptom free for 1 week
Cancer—basal cell   can donate
Cancer—lymphoma or leukemia   cannot donate
Cancer—all other types   can donate after 2 years cancer free or completion of treatment
Diabetes—insulin dependent   cannot donate
Emphysema   cannot donate
Heart attack, heart disease   call for evaluation
Hepatitis, after age 11   cannot donate, need evaluation
High Blood Pressure   can donate if controlled.
Low iron   24 hours
Malaria   3 year wait
Oral surgery, tooth extraction   3 day wait
Surgery—with transfusion   12 month wait
Surgery—without transfusion   call for evaluation
 
MEDICATIONS
Antibiotics   7 day wait from last dose
Allergy medications   can donate if experiencing no symptoms
Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Tylenol   can donate
Birth control pills   can donate
Blood pressure medications   can donate
Hormone replacement therapy   can donate
Supplements containing metal   cannot donate
Thyroid medication   can donate
Tranquilizers   can donate
Vitamins   can donate
 
VACCINATIONS
Measles, Mumps, Rubella   one-month wait
Flu   can donate
Hepatitis series   can donate unless for exposure
 
OTHER RESTRICTIONS
Body piercing, tattoos   can donate if procedure performed in an Oregon licensed facility; otherwise 12 month wait
Dieting   Steady weight loss program OK as long as loss does not exceed 3 pounds in two weeks

  cannot donate during pregnancy and for 6 weeks after end of pregnancy. Nursing mothers are advised not to donate
Residence on US military base in Europe   call for criteria
Travel to malaria area   12 month wait; call for evaluation
Travel to or residence in the UK that adds up to 3 months or more between 1980-1996   cannot donate
Travel to or residence in Europe that adds up to 5 years or more since 1980   cannot donate
