New Donor ID Requirement Implemented on February 1, 2008

Before donating blood, all donors must answer many questions that are designed to help make the blood supply safer.  Those questions have included asking for a picture ID at their first donation, and asking them to verify their name and address at subsequent donations.

On February 1, 2008, we began asking all donors to produce personal identification every time they register to donate blood.  This requirement applies to both new donors and those who have donated multiple times.  Requiring this identification will put LMBB in compliance with new regulations that are designed to add extra safeguards to our blood supply.

Forms of acceptable identification include:

An LMBB bar-coded donor card [Lost ones will be replaced upon request]
A photo ID that displays first and last names.  Approved photo IDs include:
                  Driver’s license
                  Passport
                  Student ID
                  State issued ID
                  Military ID
                  Store or work ID

Because of this positive ID requirement, we will no longer ask for Social Security numbers.

If a donors do not have a suitable ID at the time of their donation appointment, they will be able to donate; however, their unit of blood will be quarantined until we receive a positive ID from them.  This could delay the delivery of life-saving blood to one of our hospitals.
