JAY'S STORY

"Without the availability of life-saving blood, I do not know if I would have survived," says Eugene police officer Jay Shadwick. He was shot and severely wounded while with the SWAT team searching for an armed suspect in Creswell. Critically injured, he was rushed to McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center where he immediately received five stabilizing units of blood before surgery. That surgery repaired internal injuries of a collapsed lung, bruised kidney, broken ribs, and massive bleeding form the bullet's exit wound.

"I was extremely frightened," Sgt. Shadwick recounts. "I was fearful of dying or losing the use of my legs. I had to dig down inside me and continue to fight to live. There were a lot of heroic people that night—my fellow officers, the medics, and medical staff who treated me."

Sgt. Shadwick has now fully recovered and is once again back on the Eugene police force.
